Chapter 14

“Hey, are you up there?” Baxter called from the front door.

“I’m up here,” Lorrie called back and waved at Baxter from the top of the stairs.

“Are you set up and ready to go? He’s supposed to call in ten minutes.” Baxter’s coat billowed behind him as he took the stairs two and three at a time.

“Everything’s set up in the living room. I’m grabbing a bottle of water. Want one?” Lorrie asked as he headed to the fridge.

“No thanks. I sent Aiden the pictures I took and the files I was able to get from the ME. I’m interested to see what Aiden makes of this because so far, all I know is that you and Angus didn’t do it.”

“That’s about as far as I’ve been able to get too,” Lorrie sighed as he sat on the sofa next to Baxter. The laptop was open on the coffee table and Lorrie had the meeting room open and ready on his screen. “I feel like I should know more since I was the first one there, but all I remember is being scared and sick.”

“I saw this new girl, Samantha Cassidy, in the morgue. I felt sick and scared and I was prepared. Anyone would have a hard time focusing or recalling what they saw, if they came across a body like that.” Baxter gave Lorrie’s knee an affectionate squeeze then reclined and stretched his arm along the back of the sofa. “How are things with Cace?”

“I’m...making slow progress. We kissed but he won’t see me tonight,” Lorrie said with a wince.

“A kiss is a good sign, though,” Baxter mused but Lorrie groaned.

“It was until he kicked me out of the coffee shop.”

“That’s rough.”

“Yeah. But it was a hell of a kiss,” Lorrie said and Baxter held up a hand.

“Don’t make me start drinking before lunch.”

“You sound jealous.”

“You sound like an asshole,” Baxter replied dryly and they sat up and forward when a striking man with dark hair and soft blue eyes appeared on the screen. “Hey, Aiden! This is my friend, Lorrie Nixon,” he said and Aiden nodded at Lorrie.

“The artist. It’s nice to meet you,” he said almost dismissively before his focus swung to Baxter. “I looked into Angus Skinner and the pantyhose makes even less sense and points to a rushed and clumsy cover-up. Skinner didn’t have a calling card, per se. He used a single woman’s stocking to kill his first victim but it bears no resemblance to what was found on either of the recent victims. Skinner’s second victim was strangled with her scarf and he stuffed his own handkerchief in the third victim’s mouth and used his hand to smother her. He used what was handy and improvised so it would make more sense for him to have used Taylor’s blouse or Cassidy’s handbag. Why would he wander... wherever and break into a thrift shop?” Aiden asked and tossed his chin over his shoulder vaguely.

“That’s a really good point but one that most people around here were willing to overlook until they found Cassidy,” Baxter noted.
